The Children's Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park, 1611 N. Market St., was the retirement home of Thomas Johnson, Maryland's first elected governor. Guided tours of the 1790s house as well as the carriages and garden are available. The museum depicts 19th-century family life; a blacksmith shop and a log cabin are on the grounds.
Hands-on displays in quilt-making, carding wool and operating a beaten biscuit machine and cream separator are of special interest.

Historical Society of Frederick County, 24 E. Church St., features a collection of period furnishings, art and artifacts housed in a restored 1820s Federal-style mansion. A local history and genealogical library also is on the grounds.

Mount Olivet Cemetery

Mount Olivet Cemetery, s. end of Market St., contains the graves of Francis Scott Key and his wife; at least 408 "Unknown Confederates" from the battles of Antietam and Monocacy; Barbara Fritchie; and Thomas Johnson, Maryland's first elected governor. The Revolutionary War Hessian Barracks are nearby.

National Museum of Civil War Medicine, just e. of SR 355/Market St. at 48 E. Patrick St., portrays how coping with sickness and death during the Civil War ushered in a new era of medical treatment. Exhibits vividly illustrate different aspects of Civil War medicine and include such re-creations as a field dressing station and field and pavilion hospitals. Other exhibits highlight nursing and embalming. Special events and educational programs also are available.
Guided tours are available. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Schifferstadt Architectural Museum

Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is off US 15 Rosemont Ave. (exit 14) to 1110 Rosemont Ave. is a fine example of German Colonial architecture as well as of a fortified house from the French and Indian War era. Built in 1756, the house reveals early construction methods and is one of the oldest structures in Frederick.
Allow 30 minutes minimum.
